Rome is the capital city of Italy and a special commune (named Comune di Roma Capitale). Rome also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. It is the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4.3 million residents. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio, along the shores of the Tiber. The Vatican City is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason, Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.

Rome has the status of a global city and in 2016, ranked as the 14th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and Italy’s most popular tourist attraction. UNESCO lists its historic centre as a World Heritage Site monuments and museums such as the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are among the most visited tourist destinations.

Many international businesses are headquartered in Rome and its business district is the base of many companies involved in the oil and pharmaceutical industries and Rome is an important fashion and design centre and home to many international brands.
