Project Management

Project management jobs involve using different skills, knowledge, and methods in order to meet objectives and deliver a project in a finite time frame, as opposed to an ongoing process. Project managers lead teams, outlining goals, and ensuring they are met in order to deliver the final product.

Project Management Roles

Project managers are in charge of budgeting, managing resources, and ensuring the progress of the project – a project manager does almost everything surrounding the project in hand. Even once a project is finished, it is often that the project manager will analyse the completed project and report on what went well, what could have been done better and what could be done differently next time.

The majority of companies have projects that are ongoing, once one is finished another begins, therefore there are plenty of job opportunities available for project managers in a range of sectors, such as:

  • Technology
  • Construction
  • Fashion
  • Engineering
  • Advertising

Project managers can be hired for a range of projects, such as marketing campaigns, building construction and product launches they are the sole person responsible for the success or failure of the project.

Landing a job in project management often requires a bachelor’s degree in business management or a related degree, though this is not a strict requirement.

Based on these types of roles, level of seniority, and location, project manager salaries can start from around £32,000 and can reach salaries of £85,000 plus. The average salary of a project manager is around £55,000.

Key skills employers will be looking out for include:

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Organisation
  • Problem-solving

Be prepared to provide demonstrated examples of how you have previously used/developed these skills either within a previous role or another aspect of your life.

Career pathways in project management may involve starting as a project coordinator, moving on to a project manager, becoming a senior project manager, being promoted to further senior roles such as program or portfolio manager, before reaching the top end of the career spectrum with a role as a project management director.
