(Senior) Data Engineer – London (Hybrid)

Data Engineer wanted for a major digital media business operating a portfolio of some of the UK’s most recognised publishing and content brands.

A growing digital media business is looking for a Data Engineer to join its Data Science & Engineering team, helping to build, maintain and optimise the data infrastructure that underpins analytics, reporting and commercial decision-making across the organisation.

This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on SQL, Python, GCP and scalable data pipelines. You’ll work with large volumes of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data coming from advertising platforms, web analytics, content systems and external partners.

You’ll have the opportunity to own new engineering projects, improve existing architecture and help shape a scalable data ecosystem supporting hundreds of millions of users globally.

The role:

* Design, build and maintain scalable, reliable data pipelines and architecture

* Integrate large and complex datasets from multiple internal and external sources, including advertising, content, web analytics and third-party platforms

* Build and optimise ETL/ELT workflows using SQL, Python and modern data engineering technologies

* Work extensively within Google Cloud Platform, including technologies such as BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Dataflow and Dataproc

* Automate manual data processes and identify opportunities to improve the performance, scalability and resilience of existing infrastructure

* Work with structured, semi-structured and unstructured datasets, including APIs and large-scale log data

* Build and maintain data models and reporting layers to support analytics, audience insights, advertising revenue and wider business reporting

* Support downstream BI and analytics teams by ensuring data is reliable, accessible and structured effectively

* Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines, performing root cause analysis and resolving data quality or performance issues

* Collaborate with Data, Commercial, Editorial and other teams to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions

* Take ownership of engineering projects and proactively contribute to improvements across the wider data ecosystem

You:

* Have commercial experience as a Data Engineer, with strong core data engineering fundamentals

* Have excellent SQL skills and experience working with relational databases

* Are confident using Python and/or Java to build data services, pipelines and integrations

* Have experience designing, building and maintaining scalable data pipelines and architectures

* Have experience with ETL/ELT, data transformation and workflow orchestration

* Have worked with cloud-based data infrastructure, ideally GCP

* Have exposure to BigQuery, Snowflake or another modern cloud data warehouse

* Ideally have experience with tools such as Airflow, dbt or Apache Spark

* Are comfortable working with large, diverse and disconnected datasets

* Have experience integrating APIs and external data sources

* Understand data modelling, data quality and how engineering infrastructure supports downstream analytics and reporting

* Are proactive and comfortable taking ownership of projects in a fast-moving environment

* Communicate well with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and enjoy solving complex data problems
