Senior Marketing & Talent Manager

I had an interesting candidate meeting today, and it made me think, her experience is being shared with many and I wanted to share what I shared with her today.

The topic of the conversation was around industry, in this instance, how does she get out of hers and into another? It’s something she’s been working hard to change. She even quit her role after 7 years of moving within the fashion industry as she was keen to pursue a career in the agency space. She has been freelancing to attract those kinds of agency roles but for obvious reasons, she continues to attract roles in the fashion world.

This isn’t an uncommon problem. I’m often asked by candidates (and friends!) how to stand out when your industry experience doesn’t align with the one you wish to get into.

After 18 months recruiting into the Creative space, I’m keen to share my experiences on how we have been able to help candidates attract those roles:

Here’s a digestible lowdown (5 Steps to Changing Industries)

I’m not saying this is a sure-fire way to move industries, it’s always tricky. As I explained to this candidate, if HR or the hiring manager are looking at your CV versus someone who has years of experience in the industry, a lot of the time, they’re going to interview someone they’re comfortable can do the job.

BUT…

Despite being told by a lot of recruiters she didn’t have the right experience and couldn’t go into the industry, she continues to ask the question. I think, get creative, smart and clear, and if you really want something, keep trying. You never know, you could surprise yourself (and the doubters…)

What do you guys think? I’d love to know your tips/experiences.
