Director of Data Engineering
Location: Cape Town
Working Model: Hybrid, 2 days in office and 3 days remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
We are hiring on behalf of our client, a global digital and technology agency, for an experienced Director of Data Engineering to join their Cape Town team.
The successful candidate will help lead the strategic and technical direction of the Data Engineering function, overseeing a team of engineers and ensuring high-quality delivery across complex data projects. The role combines technical leadership, team management, client engagement and hands-on oversight of data engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee Data Engineering teams and technical delivery.
- Own high-impact data engineering projects and act as a senior technical advisor.
- Coach and mentor Data Engineers and drive best practices across the team.
- Act as an escalation point for complex technical data issues.
- Define and maintain high standards across data engineering delivery and deployment.
- Support new business pitches with technical expertise and solution design.
- Identify opportunities to improve Data Engineering and BI capabilities.
- Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Develop data engineering proposals, KPIs and technical deliverables.
- Ensure strong data quality, QA, documentation and security standards.
- Design robust data flows and architecture.
- Support senior client discussions, workshops and technical training.
Technical Requirements
- Advanced Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience.
- Advanced SQL, Python and R.
- Experience with machine learning techniques.
- Strong cloud and Data Engineering background.
- Exposure to AWS and Azure.
- Data warehousing experience including Snowflake and/or Redshift.
- Experience with BI and visualisation tools such as Looker Studio, Tableau and Power BI.
- Strong data architecture, pipeline and data flow design experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across dashboards and pipelines.
- Strong understanding of data quality, QA, security and deployment.
Preferred Certification
- Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer certification.
