Senior Backend Engineer

Salary: £100,000

We're partnering with a fast-growing AI startup that's building cutting-edge technology to transform how enterprise organisations harness artificial intelligence. Working at the forefront of Generative AI, LLMs and agentic workflows, they're developing a secure platform capable of solving complex, real-world problems at scale.

They're now looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to help shape the next generation of their AI platform.

The Role

This is an opportunity to work on a product where backend engineering sits at the heart of the user experience. You'll design and build scalable backend systems that power AI-driven workflows, real-time collaboration and intelligent automation while working closely with Product, AI and Engineering teams.

You'll play a key role in shaping technical architecture, mentoring engineers and driving engineering best practices across a modern cloud-native platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain scalable backend services using TypeScript, Node.js and NestJS.

• Develop robust APIs and distributed backend systems supporting AI-powered products.

• Build event-driven architectures and asynchronous workflows.

• Design secure, multi-tenant systems with a strong focus on reliability and scalability.

• Optimise database performance and contribute to system architecture decisions.

• Collaborate closely with AI engineers to integrate LLM-powered capabilities into production applications.

• Improve observability, monitoring and production reliability across the platform.

• Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance and architectural leadership.

About You

You'll be a senior backend engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while working in a fast-paced product environment.

You'll likely have:

• 5+ years' experience building production backend applications.

• Strong commercial experience with TypeScript, Node.js and NestJS.

• Experience designing scalable distributed systems and REST APIs.

• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and database design.

• Experience working with cloud-native architectures and containerised applications.

• A strong understanding of software architecture, security and engineering best practices.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to mentor and collaborate across engineering teams.

Experience with Kubernetes, RabbitMQ, LLMs, AI platforms or event-driven architectures would be highly advantageous.
